What is melatonin?

It is a chemical compound that is primarily responsible for regulating the daily sleep-wake cycle. It is our personal biological clock that tells us when it is time to go to bed and when it is time to wake up. The primary factor that affects melatonin secretion in the body is the light cycle. During the day the amount of this hormone is negligible, while in the evening and at night it increases by up to eighty percent.

Action and dosage of melatonin

Melatonin in the form of a dietary supplement is a substitute for natural melatonin, which is produced in the human body. Its intake is not dangerous to health and also does not lead to addiction, so it can be used even for a prolonged period of time. What dose of melatonin you should take is an individual matter, as is the recommended time of its supplementation. It is best to take it in the evening, and the optimal time is an hour before you plan to fall asleep. Sleep support is not the only action that is specific to this chemical compound. Studies show that melatonin also contributes to lowering cholesterol levels and regulating blood pressure.

Melatonin preparations can be taken by everyone, as they are available without a prescription. However, before starting treatment, it is worth consulting a doctor, because it is a specialist who will be able to determine what dose of melatonin is optimally suitable for us. As already mentioned, the dose of melatonin is determined individually for each patient. Usually, a dose of 1 to 3 mg of melatonin per day is used. However, in some cases, it is necessary to increase the dose by up to 5 mg per day.

Melatonin – contraindications

Not everyone should decide to take preparations with melatonin. It is not advisable for people:

  • With hypersensitivity to melatonin
  • Suffering from liver disease
  • Consuming alcohol
  • With autoimmune diseases
  • It should not be taken by children
