Is it just me, or on CSI do they seem to hold torches strangely, like in their fingers instead of holding onto it properly - is this just for camera or do they actually hold torches like that?

You mean flashlights, right?

Right...You're from Britain...

I think they might be taught to hold their flashlights a certain way or maybe it's a defensive stance or something that can help them reach their gun quickly if the need to.

No, she means 'torches', haha, what's the difference??

I think it's cool how they hold their torches, and they've changed the way everyone else in film hold their torches now.

Go the CSIs!

I think they hold them like that so it is easier to defend themselves if anyone comes towards them. If you held it the normal way, you wouldn't be able to punch where as you have a better chance if held they way they do.

Hope this makes sense to you, it does in my head

the CSIs dose hold th torches a bit funny (Ithought at first but now it's normal...)
But I saw that when they hold the gun and the torche at the same time they hold it like a normal person, just *upsidedown*, you know, under the othr hand, the one they hold the gun with...
But like they said.. I think it's easier to punch someone/defend them selfes if they hold it like they do...

the toches and flashlights come in different sizes, depending on which one they use how they hold it. the ultra big ones you are not going to hold with the finger tips. and most americans hold the little ones like that.i asked a few friends to hold them for me (from a small one thru a big one) funny each did it the same way for the size.

I think that holding it that way provides more flexibility in terms of scanning around. I think that they would hold it in their fists if there was a power outage, but they're searching for things, not just trying to get around in the dark.

Mindy - you got in ahead of me there! I was going to say the same thing about the flexibility thing - they seem to be able to twist it around to where they want to look quicker they way they hold it than if it was flat in their hands.

You mean they hold them with their hand in a "U" shape ? Am I following along right? Because my Dad is a Cop and he holds it like that even if he's looking at something in the house.

I guess some people hold it like they are carrying a bag or something. And some people hold it like a "U" or like they are lifting something.

Have you ever noticed when a CSI wears the same shirt or something like that?

i can agree with mindy and basically cops hold their flashlights with the wrist out (Harries technique) as this enables the flashlight hand to support/control the gun hand and aid in managing recoil. It also allows the flashlight to be pointed wherever the gun is pointed, which in itself may be a good or bad thing. Also, as the flashlight activating button is at the buttom (some flashlights have this feature), they can turn the light on and off for very brief intervals, which prevents the bad guys from locking on to their position by following their light beam

you got it DNA.
the best way it for you all to get a couple of torches and flashlights and see how differently you hold the tiny ones to the mega lights. bet you find you are holding them the same way they do...umm habit or watching too much CSI and it went to your brain without you knowing. hee hee

I'd use a torch so big I would need two hands to hold it..

that way, I could really 'protect myself', if you know what I mean..

I think defence is spelt with a 'c', but I could be wrong, I usually end up with the american spelling of things.... like 'pretence', I always put an 's' in that...
